A Week In Lipstick – Autumn / Winter Edition

I’m not sure if it’s the crisp weather, the pumpkin spice everything, oversize knits or baking every weekend but I just find this season so incredible cozy and lovely. The moment I start gravitating towards darker lips signals the change of seasons, so here are my top 7 lipsticks to wear in the Autumn / Winter period, one for each day of the week!

MAC Verve – Satin finish. This lipstick is a brown- plum and extremely wearable for those that aren’t that brave to wear a dark lip. If you want to rock a dark lip to work for example this is the perfect one to choose, I’ve been wearing this to the office and I love it. The formula is also amazing, it glides on really softly and doesn’t dry out your lips. It lasts until lunchtime when it needs a quick top-up.

OCC Lip Tar Black Dahlia -Matte finish. I have a love-hate relationship with this lipstick. Let’s start with the negatives. It is so difficult to apply and bleeds even with lip liner so it takes ages to clean up and perfect your lips. However. Once this is on it stays on, also the colour is this most gorgeous blackened berry red at full opacity or it can be worn as a sheer wash of colour too. If you want to feel extra vampy and have the time to apply it, this is the lipstick to go for.

Revlon Super Lustrous  Really Red – Matte finish. I remember first seeing this lipstick on a girl at uni and when I found out what the name was I went to Boots to buy it the very same day. This classic red lipstick has a slight orange undertone and looks fantastic on all skin tones. It is a matte finish but I don’t find it drying.

MAC Film Noir – Satin finish. If you’re looking for a 90’s Janet Jackson dark brown lipstick then this is the one for you. I love throwing this on with an oversize denim shirt, big hair and hoops, throwback anyone?

MAC Diva – Matte finish. Diva is one of my all time favourite lipsticks, it is a burgundy red lipstick and looks just gorgeous on all skin tones especially if you’re warmer/darker. I find that it can last a really long time on the lips but because it’s a matte finish it is drying. If you’re looking for something darker then Sin by MAC is a really good option.

Charlotte Tilbury Glastonberry- Matte finish. I gave into the hype about this lipstick and I’m not even sorry. Glastonberry is a dark berry lipstick with a cooler undertone. I love wearing this colour out and about on the weekend when I’m feeling a bit more glam. It wears comfortably on the lips but you’ll probably need a liner to pair with it.

Charlotte Tilbury Bond Girl – Not everyday this season is a dark lippy day, so for those every day, out and about days, I whip this beauty out. I cannot stress how pretty this colour is, it’s a warm pink with brown neutral undertones that complements any eye look and make my lips look full and luscious, I find myself gravitating towards this whenever I want to look polished, yet simple.

L-R: Verve, Black Dahlia, Really Red, Film Noir, Diva, Glastonberry, Bond Girl

MAC Haul! Feat. Soft & Gentle, Strobe Cream, Vegas Volt & more…

Oops I did it again! Yup, I went shopping and did a bit of damage to my credit card at MAC. I think MAC is one of those brands that I will always keep coming back to because it’s the first make-up brand that really got me into make-up. Alas, here is what I bought at MAC this month…

Prep + Prime 24-Hour Extend Eye Base

This eyeshadow primer is pretty darn amazing. I’m an Urban Decay Primer Potion (UDPP) gal, but this primer is just as good in my opinion. It’s very thick and has a silicone texture. This means that when applied to the eyelid it smooths down creases and uneven texture (great for mature skin). It also doesn’t catch onto the eyeshadow which I find I get with UDPP, so you don’t have to spend as much time blending. Eyeshadow lasts just as long with this product as with UDPP. The only down side is that it doesn’t fully neutralise pigmentation on my dark eyelids so I need to apply a concealer beforehand.

Prep + Prime Fix +

Finally I understand the hype of Fix +. After doing my make-up I spritz this onto my face and it does an amazing job of setting my make-up and removing the cakey look of full coverage make-up. I definitely think this prolongs the wear and appearance of my make-up. My only gripe is that the mist isn’t as fine as I’d like it to be.

Mineralize Skinfinish – Soft & Gentle

I know this is a favourite for a lot of people but actually I’m not a big fan of this highlighter. I find that the glitter is far too chunky and the colour doesn’t suit my skin tone as much as some other highlighters I own. It’s difficult to apply without my face looking like a disco ball, perhaps I need to try it with a fan brush or something- does anyone know a really good fan brush I can buy?

Strobe Cream

Strobe cream is an illuminating cream to be worn under foundation/ BB cream. I wasn’t sure about this product before I bought it because I thought it may make my skin look greasy, especially having oily skin. Surprisingly this doesn’t make me greasy at all if used just on the high points of the face. It gives my skin a pretty glow when it’s looking dull. This product is great if you’re going for the strobing technique (will do a post on this soon). I do kind of wish they had a strobe cream with a gold undertone that would suit my complexion even more but this will do until then.

Lip Erase – Dim

I think this is quite a new product from MAC and when I heard about it I knew I had to try it. I always struggle with lipsticks showing up their true colour on my lips due to the dark pigmentation on them. Lip erase is a lip balm that neutralises the colour of your lips. What makes this different from using foundation over your lips is that it doesn’t change the colour or mix with the lipstick applied on top. It is also hydrating on the lips so they won’t crack under your favourite lipstick. This is a game changer for sure.

Amplified Creme Lipstick – Vegas Volt

This lipstick is such a gorgeous coral shade, I’m wishing I bought it earlier in the Summer. I love the texture of the Amplified lipsticks as they are quite hydrating and last a good 6 hours on the lips. The swatch of Vegas Volt is on the right and I used Morange by MAC on the left as a reference.

Obviously, me being me, I had to try all the products out at once! …

That’s all for this haul. Have you tried any of these products before? Are there any other MAC products that I need to try? Comment below and let me know.

Jays Current Top 10 Holy Grail

Many of us bloggers and non-bloggers alike have certain beauty products that we love to use time and time again. However, we all have those certain products that have a very special place in our hearts, because when we use them they make us look and feel our absolute BEST. These are what we refer to as “Holy-Grail” products. They are products you keep repurchasing, have solved your biggest cosmetic woes and probably have a few back-ups of just in case you run out.

I decided to sit down and think long and hard about the products I use the most and that I cannot go without. It was extremely difficult to whittle it down to just 10 products because in reality I could probably do a Top 20 list.  I ended up chosing products which I feel are either revolutionary in their function or that make my life easier through using them. I’ve reviewed most of these products before so please check out their individual reviews if you want to know more.

1) Clinique Take The Day Off Oil Cleanser. This is the best make-up remover I have ever used. It is perfect for oily skin, fragrance free and gets every single bit of make-up off my skin.

2) Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation. As an oily skin gal I cannot tell you how amazed I am with this foundation. It is long lasting, gives amazing coverage and controls oil. Hallelujah!

3) Urban Decay 24/7 Liquid Liner Perversion. I’ve tried numerous liquid liners during my years but this one is my absolute fave. It is jet black, easy to apply, doesn’t clump, doesn’t dry up and doesn’t smudge or flake.

4) MAC Pro-Longwear Concealer. When I need full coverage concealing I look no further than this bad boy. It covers my under eye baggies completely and lasts all day.

5) MAC Studio Sculpt. This is another holy grail foundation, perfect for anyone between normal to oily skin. It gives really good coverage and can withstand humid weather whilst looking incredibly skin like.

6) Anastasia Dip Brow Pomade. I can’t sing enough praises for this product. My eyebrows have literally transformed since using this. Gone are the days where I spent ages using wax pencils or powders to fill in my brows. This cream is so soft, it applies like a dream and allows my brows to look amazingly hair-like.

7) Paula’s Choice Hydralight SPF 30 Moisturiser. Again, those with oily skin recognise how difficult it is to find a SPF moisturiser that doesn’t feel like you’re applying paste on your skin. This moisturiser is light, hydrates the skin and also gives great UVB and UVA protection. I will not leave my house without it.

8) Bourjois Volumne 1 Seconde Mascara – This is my holy grail mascara. It curls, thickens and lengthens whilst not smudging or flaking and all for under a tenner!

9) Paulas Choice 2% BHA liquid and 10% AHA Weekly Resurfacing Treatment. Okay, okay I know this is cheating but I kind of regard the chemical exfoliants as one product *ahem* lol. The BHA liquid has made my blackheads disappear completely and the AHA weekly treatment sloughs off the top layers of my skin to reveal baby soft, glowing skin.

10) Paula’s Choice Antioxidant Serum. For the daytime there is literally no better serum for my skin. This serum contains a lot of antioxidants and is hydrating whilst not exacerbating my oiliness. It also sits wonderfully under make-up.

So I hope you enjoyed this post. Now, I would like to know, what are YOUR holy-grail items? Comment below and let me know.

Until next time …

MLBB – My Lips But Better Tag

I was tagged by the lovely Stash Matters to do the “My Lips But Better” tag. For those who don’t know, as the name suggests, these are lip products that are a similar colour to your natural lip. By wearing such products it can bring out your lip shape, brighten your complexion and make you look more put together, without looking made up. I think the term “My Lips But Better” differs from person to person as we’ve all got different natural lip colours. I opted for a few that suit my colouring in particular.

1) Gerard Cosmetics 1995 – Warm brown with pink undertones, matte. I bought this lipstick just recently and I have to say I am OBSESSED with it. The colour warms up my complexion but I really think this will suit absolutely anyone.

2) MAC Mocha – Peach brown with yellow undertones, satin. Finding nudes for darker skin is especially difficult so when I found Mocha I was hooked. This is a natural peachy brown that is slightly more orange than 1995 and it really makes my lips look plump and full.

3) Bobbi Brown Rose – Medium rose, satin. This lipstick is one of my all time favourites. It is the perfect neutral pink that is lovely to wear during the daytime or if you want to go for that “no make-up, make-up” look.

4) MAC Twig- Pink with brown undertones, satin. Twig is a very popular bridal colour because of its neutral pink colouring. Some may find this colour a little too brown, but personally I love it for a MLBB look.

I’m not sure the pictures really capture the colours that well as they are all quite similar but I hope you can tell the slight differences between the lipsticks.

This is a really fun post to do as I’ve been loving MLBB lipsticks recently. I tag the following people to do this post, I look forward to seeing your picks!

MAC Twig, Verve and Mocha – Swatches & 300 Followers!

Hello peeps! How you doing this Sunday? I’ve currently got a really bad neck pain so I’ve been out of action all day (cue Sopranos box set). I just wanted to say a massive thank you to everyone who is following my blog, this weekend I hit 300 followers! Thanks you, thank you, thank you! I’ve got so much appreciation for you all, this is an awesome community and I love the supportiveness of everyone I’ve met through this channel. I honestly didn’t think I’d get 10 followers let alone 300!

Anyway! I bought three new MAC lipsticks and I wanted to share the swatches with you. The three I purchased are Twig (Soft muted brownish-pink – satin finish), Verve (Muted brownish-plum – satin finish) and Mocha (Peachy yellow-brown – satin finish). I love how the MAC satin finish lipsticks feel on the lips, they glide on smoothly and don’t dry out the lips unlike some of the matte colours.

I mostly wanted to buy colours that I could wear to work so they are very muted and wearable shades for the daytime. Twig is your typical “my-lips-but-better” cool pink that everyone seems to be obsessed with. Verve is a darker plum colour with brown undertones, so again still wearable for the daytime and perhaps my favourite of the three is Mocha. I’d almost given up my search for the perfect “nude” lip for my skin tone but here it is! it is notoriously difficult to find a nude for darker skin that doesn’t wash us out completely, Mocha is dark and peachy enough to complement my warm dark skin tone – I love it!

Here are the swatches from left to right: Twig, Verve, Mocha in natural light and with flash.

June Wishlist

Junewishlist Waddup peeps! Payday is next week and I’m near peeing my panties in excitement thinking of all the cool things I’m going to be buying next month LOL. To be honest my wishlist for June is based around updating a lot of things that well, need updating. So let’s get into it!

1) GHD Air Hairdryer. The last time I got a hairdryer was when my dad to bought me one…in year 9, seriously. I’ve been using the same Remington dryer for 10+ years and whilst it has served me well I actually think it damages my hair a lot. I love GHD, they do fantastic electrical hair tools so I’m going to be buying the Air hairdryer for hopefully some professional salon results (she hopes).

2) Kiehls Creamy Eye Treatment. Have I mentioned I have dry under eyes? I need a heavy duty cream for my eye area so I shall be trying this cream which apparently is very thick, perfect.

3) Office Kicker Slip On. I’ve been seeing a lot of shoes in this style recently and I’m liking it. I’m all about casual shoes and I need a good pair of black ones. These have a white flatform for some extra height and a black snakeskin effect on the shoe.

4) Adidas Climachill Sonic Boost AL GFX Shoes. My current gym shoes are so old school that I’m literally embarrassed to wear them sometimes. I’m a sneaker freak and I love the way Adidas trainers feel on my feet. These have a funky pattern on them too which looks right up my street.

5) Jane Iredale Empty Compact. I recently got a Jane Iredale pressed powder but it didn’t come with a compact. I’m not really impressed with that considering the powder was so expensive on it’s own. Oh well, it’s a good powder so I’m buying a case to house it.

6) Copper Table Lamp. I’m still loving copper home ware and really, really want a copper table lamp. The one pictured is from Oliver Bonas but I’m not sure they have that in stock any more. Either way I’ll find one, I like this very similar one from The Forest & Co (Notonthehighstreet.com).

7) Stila Stay All Day Liquid Eyeliner. I haven’t been wearing eyeliner much recently because I simply find it too long to apply. I’ve heard this eyeliner is fantastic as it is long lasting, dark and has a felt tip applicator for ease of application.

8) Clarks Casual Sandals. I saw this pair of shoes when Suzi from StyleSuzi featured them in a recent haul. These look so comfy and a good quality pair of shoes for the summer.

9) MAC Lipsticks. I need to update my MAC lipstick wardrobe. I have my eye on Verve, Ruby Woo, Twig, Mocha and Ravishing.

10) HP Z5000 Wireless Optical Mouse. My current mouse is umm…. borrowed from… somewhere. I love white tech and this mouse will match my laptop. A good mouse is definitely necessary for all the blogging/ net surfing I do.

11) Adidas Performance Shoulder Bag. I need a bag to carry my gym stuff. This looks like a good one that isn’t too big but can fit all the essentials in.

12) Adidas Rita Ora White Smoke Leggings. Apparently flared yoga pants aren’t really in fashion anymore, who knew! I need to buy some fitted leggings for working out and how dope are these!? They are sooo cool! I need these in my life.

13) Adidas Sports Vests. Guys I SWEAR I’m not being sponsored by Adidas. I’m just loving their clothes at the moment, they have some really fresh, funky designs that I’m liking and again my gym wardrobe needs updating. Don’t judge me.

14) Shock Absorber Ultimate Gym Bra. Us DD+ girls need some extra support when it comes to sports bras. I’ve tried numerous brands over the years and Shock Absorber are the absolute best, trust me ladies. They have the double straps at the back so your puppies will be practically stuck to your chest.

That’s all for now, I hope you enjoyed this post. Comment below on what you’re payday treats will be. Until next time! Jay x

MAC Sheertone Shimmer Blush – Ambering Rose – Review & Swatch

When I saw this tutorial on Youtube I knew I had to buy the blush that was being used on the model. Ambering Rose from MAC is a Sheertone Shimmer Blush which I believe is one of the most beautiful colours available for darker skin tones.

The colour is difficult to describe, I would say it’s a very warm muted rose colour. It doesn’t appear garish or bright on the skin. There is a shimmer but nothing overwhelming. I love wearing this colour with pink lips during the Spring/ Summer, it adds a nice fresh warmth to the cheeks.

This blush is extremely pigmented and has to be applied with a very light hand. I would say it almost exclusively suits medium tan to deep/dark skin tones, however don’t quote me on that if you’re lighter and love this blush haha! As with all MAC blushes it doesn’t fade, move or change colour during the day.

If you’re around my skin tone or darker you must, must check this out, you will not regret it!

Beauty Wishlist – April

April is going to be a broke month for me I’ve got a few important birthdays coming up so I’ve had to reduce my beauty budget a teeeeny bit, but hey a girls gotta shop right? Here is my April beauty wishlist:

1) Bobbi Brown Intensive Skin Supplement – I need a new serum and this one looks really good, can’t wait to try it and review for you guys.

2) MakeUp Forever HD Foundation (153) – I bought the colour 173 recently and realised it’s way too dark for me. Unfortunately MUFE don’t do a 163 colour in the UK so I need to get 153 to mix with my current one.

3) Estee Lauder Double Wear Foundation – A holy grail foundation for many, which I’ve been meaning to try.

4) Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer (SX11) – Lots of high hopes for this product. I’ve heard it’s incredibly pigmented and covers dark circles effortlessly, for £38 it better do just that haha!

5) Paula’s Choice Shine Stopper Oil Control Primer – Again I’ve read some great reviews on this and I love Paula’s Choice, so I’ll be interested to see if this will be the primer to conquer my oily T-zone.

6) MAC Powder Blush in Ambering Rose – This colour looks amazing on dark skin from the swatches I’ve seen, I MUST have it.

7) Makeup Revolution Blushes in WOW and HOT – At £1 each I’m interested to see if these blushes are any good. Reviews coming soon.

8) theBalm Bahama Mama – I need a sculpting powder and it was between this and the Kevyn Aucoin sculpting powder.  I chose this as it is cheaper obviously, so hopefully it’ll work for my skintone.

9) Makeup Revolution I ♡ Makeup I Heart Chocolate palette  – Apparently this is a very good dupe for the Too Face Chocolate Bar Palette. I don’t want to spend tonnes on an eyeshadow palette so hopefully this one won’t disappoint.

That’s all for now folks, what’s on your beauty wishlist? Comment below and let me know 🙂

MAC Pro Longwear Concealer (NW35) – Review

For the past six years I’ve been using the Bobbi Brown corrector and creamy concealer duo to conceal my under eye area when I need full coverage on my undereyes.  I’ve since used numerous concealers which haven’t been up to scratch. Until now.

I went into MAC to get a colour match for this concealer a few months ago, it cost £17 for 9ml of product. I’m usually a NC42-44 in their foundation range, but I was matched to NW35 for the concealer, I was told the pink tone balances out blue tones under the eyes. The colour match is quite a good one but can look pink on my skin, so I usually put a yellow-tone highlighter on top to match my skintone more.

The concealer comes in pump form which makes it both hygienic and allows the product to remain stable without air-exposure. The concealer is a liquid, I was skeptical about how well it would cover my dark circles. Oh how wrong I was! This product has amazing coverage. I simply use my finger to dabs dots of the concealer under my eyes and on my eyelids and blend out using the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. The concealer dries quite matte so you don’t need to dust powder under your eyes if you don’t want to.

When this concealer has dried it will NOT budge without makeup remover. It does not melt or slip off my face during the heat and it doesn’t crease or cake in my lines. This concealer lasts a full 12 hours without fading a bit. This require an oil-based make-up remover.

Now onto the few negatives. I did find that the concealer oxidised over the day, I’m not 100% convinced this is the correct colour for me because it looks quite pink after it dries. This also caused my under eyes to become extremely dry because it is so mattifying. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend this concealer for every day use.

I’m very happy with this full coverage, long-wear concealer. It’s what I wear when I want flawless long wearing coverage. It’s a holy grail product and a must for any girls make-up kit.
