Urban Decay Naked Skin Weightless Complete Coverage Concealer (Medium Dark Warm) – Review

If any of you know me personally, you’ll know that the thing I dislike the most about my face are my dark undereye circles. Concealer is that one make-up item I try not to leave the house without, if I can help it. After much deliberation on whether to buy yet another concealer I decided it was time to give the Naked Skin Concealer from Urban Decay a go.

I purchase this concealer from Feel Unique for £17.50 and chose the colour “Medium Dark Warm”. This concealer comes in eight different shades with warm, neutral and cool undertones.

Naked Skin is packaged in a tube and comes with a doe-foot applicator. I actually really like these types of applicators although some people may find them unhygienic.

When I first applied this concealer I noticed that it is very lightweight on the skin. It blends easily and doesn’t sink into fine lines and pores. The best part for me is the fact that it doesn’t feel drying on the skin which I experience with most other concealers. It provides medium coverage and it lasts around 8 hours on the skin. If I wanted a full coverage look I would use a corrector before the concealer to neutralise dark pigmentation. The colour Medium Dark Warm is absolutely perfect for my NC44 skin tone and I love that it has a strong yellow undertone.

Urban Decay Naked Skin Concealer. From L-R: Without concealer, Application, After blending

As you can see from the picture above the majority of my dark circles were concealed but even after two layers this didn’t get rid of my dark circles completely. If I wanted my make-up to look really flawless I’d layer this over an orange based corrector or another concealer.

In terms of how this feels on the skin, this concealer is very similar to my Maybelline Fit Me concealer, however it has better coverage and doesn’t crease as much. There are a lot of reviews stating that this concealer doesn’t crease at all and to be honest whilst it did crease significantly less than most other concealers, it still creased a little bit into my expression lines. I didn’t find this to be a major issue however, it’s nothing a bit of blending with my finger can’t solve.

Overall I think Urban Decay have got it right with this concealer. It is lightweight, non-drying and gives moderate coverage with minimal creasing. It has slowly become a staple for me and I will be repurchasing it after I’m done with this tube.

Have you tried this concealer before? If so what were your thoughts? Comment below and let me know!

L.A. Girl Pro-Conceal HD High Definition Concealer – Review

IMG_3285

Gone are the days when I used to turn my nose up at drug-store or high street concealers. This concealer is something I’ve seen pop up quite a few times around the internet but being in the UK I never thought to investigate into the product. I did however do some research recently and decided to purchase this online from an Ebay seller for just £4.99. My package arrived within 2 working days and in brand new packaging.

Pro-conceal from L.A. Girl is a medium and buildable coverage concealer that is supposed to camouflage imperfections and minimise the appearance of fine lines. There are a massive 24 colours to choose from so it covers a wide range of skin tones, I opted for Medium Beige as this is what other women of my colouring (NC44) recommended. You get 8g of product which by comparison is more than my Maybelline Fit Me concealer.

The packaging of this concealer isn’t my favourite, I prefer doe-foot applicators for concealers, this one however comes with a squeezy tube and a brush tip. Application is smooth and creamy, I like to blend this in with my ring finger. I am really impressed with the coverage of this concealer, it actually managed to mask my dark circles pretty well, almost as well as my MAC Pro-Longwear concealer. I also found that it didn’t crease into my expression lines and photographs beautifully which is a big plus. The colouring is perfect for my skin tone, it isn’t too pink and just the right amount of orange to counteract darkness under the eyes.

Over the course of the day this concealer held up really well, it faded a tiny bit and I did find that it clinged to dry patches so it is important to wear a hydrating cream underneath it. For such a cheap product this is really, really impressive, so impressive that I’m looking to purchase some other colours for highlighting/contouring purposes. Bravo L.A. Girl, bravo!

Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer (SX11) – Review

kevyn

This product is the most expensive make-up item I have ever purchased, at £38 a pot it is something that I bought in the hopes that it would be a miracle product.

Kevyn Aucoin Sensual Skin Enhancer can be used in a number of ways, as a foundation, concealer, highlighter or tinted moisturiser when mixed with your day cream. I bought this product from Space NK solely for the purpose of concealing my under eye circles. The colour SX11 is a nice match for my NC44 skin. It is a bit lighter than my skin so it gives the highlighted effect and it has a very yellow undertone. For £38 you get a lot of product (18g) compared to other concealers. For example my Bobbi Brown Creamy Concealer is just 1.4g and costs £19. Therefore this jar will outlive its 18 month shelf life.

Packaging: Packaging is fit for purpose. The small jar allows easy application of the product but I wish there was a mirror in the lid.

IMG_3140

Formula: When reading the ingredients list of this product I wasn’t impressed. Not only does it contain Mineral Oil, it also contains Fragrance! Fragrance is not supposed to be used on the sensitive eye area as it is pro-ageing and pro-sensitising. It also contains Talc which I try avoid in my beauty products.

Texture: The best way to use this product is with a buffing concealer brush. The texture of this product is extremely thick and paste-like like therefore it needs the heat from your face to really blend into the skin. It sets very quickly and catches onto any dry patches so it is important to make sure the skin is very hydrated.

Appearance: Now I will say this much, this product is so incredibly pigmented it will cover everything and your sins. It literally camouflages your skin so you can’t see your real skin, I would go as far as saying this could probably cover up a tattoo. You need to use the tiniest amount of it as well. It is the one stop shop for undereye concealing, you do not need to layer any other products with it but it cannot be used on your eyelids. In the picture below I used a tiny bit of the product to blocked out my veins and freckles on the back of my hand.

IMG_3141

IMG_3146

Longevity: The longevity of this product is most disappointing. Even after setting the product it creased on me and set into fine lines. Furthermore it faded a lot over the course of the day. Not what I would expect from such a high-end product. There was no oxidising of the colour on me.

Overall this has been a really disappointing product for me, whilst it looks wonderful when it is first applied, I do not enjoy the creasing, fading and mostly the ingredients. My undereye area is on the dryer side and this product catches onto the skin making it look worse than it is, also it creases heavily into my expression lines. I will probably use it for any skin blemishes or if I need to clean up around my eyebrows or lips. Personally if you’re skin is like mine you’re much better off avoiding this product and using a liquid concealer and corrector together.

MAC Pro Longwear Concealer (NW35) – Review

IMG_2888

For the past six years I’ve been using the Bobbi Brown corrector and creamy concealer duo to conceal my under eye area when I need full coverage on my undereyes.  I’ve since used numerous concealers which haven’t been up to scratch. Until now.

I went into MAC to get a colour match for this concealer a few months ago, it cost £17 for 9ml of product. I’m usually a NC42-44 in their foundation range, but I was matched to NW35 for the concealer, I was told the pink tone balances out blue tones under the eyes. The colour match is quite a good one but can look pink on my skin, so I usually put a yellow-tone highlighter on top to match my skintone more.

The concealer comes in pump form which makes it both hygienic and allows the product to remain stable without air-exposure. The concealer is a liquid, I was skeptical about how well it would cover my dark circles. Oh how wrong I was! This product has amazing coverage. I simply use my finger to dabs dots of the concealer under my eyes and on my eyelids and blend out using the Real Techniques Miracle Complexion Sponge. The concealer dries quite matte so you don’t need to dust powder under your eyes if you don’t want to.

IMG_2889

IMG_2890

IMG_2892

When this concealer has dried it will NOT budge without makeup remover. It does not melt or slip off my face during the heat and it doesn’t crease or cake in my lines. This concealer lasts a full 12 hours without fading a bit. This require an oil-based make-up remover.

Now onto the few negatives. I did find that the concealer oxidised over the day, I’m not 100% convinced this is the correct colour for me because it looks quite pink after it dries. This also caused my under eyes to become extremely dry because it is so mattifying. Therefore, I wouldn’t recommend this concealer for every day use.

I’m very happy with this full coverage, long-wear concealer. It’s what I wear when I want flawless long wearing coverage. It’s a holy grail product and a must for any girls make-up kit.

Maybelline Instant Anti-Age The Eye Eraser Concealer (Nude) – Review

IMG_2837

Hey lovelies! I picked this concealer up in Superdrug the other day for £7.99. To be honest I’m a bit confused because I’m not sure whether this concealer is the same as the much talked about “Instant age-rewind concealer” by Maybelline, but perhaps they’ve change the name for the UK? If anyone knows comment below! The colour range for this concealer is a bit dissappointing, there was only two to choose from and this is the darkest.

This concealer is said to instantly conceal dark circles and fine lines because it contains goji berry extract to care for the skin around the eyes.

To dispense the product you have to twist the top until product comes out of the sponge. Initially I wasn’t sure about the sponge as it could harbour bacteria in it, however on the packaging it says this  concealer has an anti-microbial system which doesn’t require any cleaning. The sponge applicator allows a nice even distribution of product.

L-R: Without concealer, application, blended out

As you can see from the pictures above the colour is a little bit too light for me but it is very highly pigmented and managed to conceal all the darkness. I like that this colour has a yellow tone giving my undereyes a highlighted effect. Once I applied my powder to set my undereye the colour evened out a bit more to match my skin tone. What was really impressive was that this concealer didn’t crease at all under my eyes throughout the day. There was also not a lot of fading throughout the day.

I think I’ll be using this concealer more for highlighting purposes because of the light colour, it blends easily and gives nice coverage for such a lightweight forumula. Definitely a great drugstore concealer.

Maybelline Fit Me Concealer (Deep 35) – Review

300

I’m a make-up snob…or at least I used to be.

This is the first drugstore base make-up that I have ever purchased. I never used to shop at the drugstore because they simply didn’t cater to darker skin tones, especially with yellow/golden undertones. However in the last few years I have been seeing more and more colour ranges popping up for women of colour.

I was in the market for a new daily concealer. I had been using the Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener for a few years but always felt it wasn’t pigmented enough on it’s own. I wanted something that felt light on the skin but also covered up my panda eyes. There has been a lot of hype about the Maybelline Fit Me Concealer as it is supposed to be a dupe for the Nars Creamy Concealer so I decided to give it a try.

I opted for the colour Deep, number 35 and bought it from Boots for £5.99. I feel that this colour is a good match for me, it has a pink-beige undertone which counteracts blue under my eyes but I wish it had a little bit more yellow in it, I’m an NC44 in MAC for reference.

The concealer comes with a doe-foot applicator which makes it very convenient to use. The consistency is creamy, highly pigmented and blends easily. This is best blended with a fluffy concealer brush.

I actually find that this concealer is way more pigmented than my Bobbi Brown one and it lasts much longer during the day. If I wear just one layer of this there is no creasing but if I wear two layers there is a bit of creasing by the end of the day.

This is a great little concealer and for £5.99 I can’t complain.  Yes I am now a drugstore convert. If you could recommend some more concealers for my skintone comment below!

How to remove ashy appearance when wearing foundation : Medium – Dark skin

I am massively excited right now because all my foundation woes have been solved!!!

For years I have been trying to find the correct product to combat the ashy appearance around my mouth when wearing foundation. I’ve tried wearing darker foundations to balance my skin tone but I always end up looking like an oompa loompa (not a cute look).

I did some research and it seems like a lot of women of colour, especially those with a deeper skin tone suffer from hyper-pigmentation around the eye and mouth area. The thing with hyperpigmentation is that it has a distinctly grey-blue tone to it so it isn’t something you can fix with a darker foundation. So on with my research I then learnt that make-up artists use something called an orange corrector to balance dark spots on deeper skin tones. Orange is opposite blue in the colour wheel therefore it counteracts those colours, thereby lifting the pigmentation to match your real skin tone.

I had a look around and the following correctors should be great for anyone who wears NW/NC 35+  in MAC Foundation:

. MAC Prep + Prime Highlighter – Peach Lustre

. Make Up For Ever Camouflage Creme – Orange (20)

. NYX Concealer Jar -Orange

. MAC Studio Finish Skin Corrector – Pure Orange

To use all you need to do is dab a bit of the product on your dark spots and blend. After you have let that absorb/dry, apply your foundation. If your dark spots are especially bad you can apply a salmon corrector underneath your foundation, Bobbi Brown do some great salmon correctors.

I’ve tried the Prep + Prime Peach Lustre myself and it works brilliantly for my skin tone, I’m so happy that I can now confidently wear foundation and especially take flash photography without having an ashy appearance around my mouth.

Happy experimenting!

Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener (Dark Peach) – Review

Now it is no secret that I’m a Bobbi Brown girl, I met this brand when I was 18 and I have loved it ever since. It is also no secret that I have awful dark circles under my eyes that make me look like I’ve been in the ring with Mike Tyson!

I’m not a fan of heavy make-up during the daytime so I wanted to try a light under eye concealer that would survive my 12 hour day without settling into my fine lines, but would also brighten the under eye area.

Cue, Bobbi Brown Tinted Eye Brightener.

My foundation match for Bobbi Brown is Honey or Medium to Dark and for MAC it is NC44. I was matched to Dark Peach for the Tinted Eye Brightener.

The packaging is a 6ml clear plastic tube, which is great as you can see how much product you have left. The doe-foot applicator make application of the product smooth and precise.

The lady at the Bobbi Brown counter explained that this concealer can be used under the eyes as well as on the eye lid. The consistency is a light, blendable cream and it has a buildable coverage. I apply this product by dotting it under my eyes and blending out with a concealer brush, you can also use your ring finger. I then pat the product in with my ring finger. If necessary I will put another layer of product on for more coverage.

This product is great for someone who finds that concealers always cake and settle under their eyes after a long day. I use this product every day when I go to work and a single tube lasts me around 4 months and costs around £20.

I will say that this product isn’t that pigmented or thick and would probably be better for highlighting purposes than concealing dark circles.
